Texas family convicted of involvement in Capitol riots

In Washington, a family was convicted of the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Dawn and Thomas Munn went to the capital with four of their eight children because they said they wanted clarity on whether the presidential election was fair.

The Munns were among the first to break into the Capitol. They climbed through a broken window and made their way from the crypt, the visitor center, to the room where the Senate is in session, CNN reports.

Dawn Munn told the judge she was looking for evidence the election was fair. “If we don’t have fair elections, we don’t have a country,” she said. The judge was not impressed and pointed out that she was pushing democracy in the right direction.

Call on social media

Her husband, Thomas Munn, told the judge he felt he needed to speak up, even though he had never been politically active before. Before the storm, he had called for a march on Washington on social media.

A daughter of the two, who is a mother herself, walked through the dust in court. Kristi Munn said she wished she had “slowed down a little”. She added that she would like to set a good example for her own three children.

A son who was also present, Joshua, was “forced” to come to the capital despite his physical disability, the judge said. The judge blamed the mother: As a nurse, she should have known better.

Both parents were sentenced to two weeks in prison and house arrest. Three adult children were sentenced to suspended prison terms and house arrest. The youngest, still a minor, got away with it.
