A sensational trial of a British nurse for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of ten others is drawing to a close.
The jury began its deliberations in Manchester District Court on Monday. The lay judges must now judge whether the accused 33-year-old is guilty. It may take several days for a decision to be made.
Prosecutors allege that between June 2015 and June 2016, the woman murdered a total of seven babies and attempted to kill 10 others in the maternity ward of a clinic in the western English city of Chester. The defendant denies the allegations. She claims the children died of natural causes or misconduct by others.
Jurors sent to consider verdict in neonatal nurse Lucy Letby’s 36-week trial.

Judge James Goss said the jury was under no time pressure to reach a unanimous decision. The lay judges should put aside all emotions and deliberate “fairly, calmly, objectively and analytically”. In total, they must pass judgment on 22 charges – according to the prosecution, in some cases the nurse tried to kill a child several times.
After weeks of cross-examination, prosecutor Nick Johnson said the 33-year-old “got away with so much” that she finally thought she could “do pretty much anything she wanted.” In June 2016 alone, the woman allegedly killed two of three triplets on three consecutive days and injured another boy so badly that he was transferred to intensive care.
The trial began in October 2022 and was expected to take six months. This deadline has already been clearly exceeded. (aeg/sda/dpa)
