The Russian army is under immense pressure: Ukraine’s counter-offensive is bearing fruit and the defenders are pushing back the occupiers on some parts of the front. Russian President Vladimir Putin apparently does not want to look at this anymore: Now he would have deposed army chief Valeri Gerasimov (67).
The Moscow Times was the first to report on this, quoting several Russian war bloggers. Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov will retain his position, but “no longer has anything to do with solving problems at the front,” writes the well-informed Rybar channel.
According to Romanov Light’s channel, Gerasimov will be replaced by Colonel General Mikhail Teplinsky (54), the former commander of the airborne forces. Teplinski has held this office since June 2022.
It would not be the first change at the top since the start of the war in Ukraine. At first it was unclear who was in command of the invasion, as of April 2022 it was Alexander Dwornikov (61), who was replaced two months later by Gennady Schidko (57) – who eventually had to give way to “General Armageddon” Sergei Surovikin ( 56). ) in October 2022 .
The same Suroviki soon fell out of favor with Putin. Just three months after taking office, Gerasimov replaced the general, who was popular with the troops. Until now.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), it is not the only command post that confuses Putin. He is said to have filled 17 high posts with new people between the start of the war and May 2023.
