Matura parties, or Abi-Ball, as the German equivalent is called, represent the end of school. For students, they are mainly an opportunity to let go after years of learning.
But lately such graduations have been overshadowed by scenes of brutal violence and tragedy. The incidents are piling up.
For example, in Berlin, where, according to “Bild”, uninvited guests wanted to participate in such a party on Friday evening, but were not allowed access to the restaurant. The three men then became aggressive.
When the students became aware of the scene, they asked the men to leave as well. But they did not follow the request. Instead, the fists soon flew. One of the strangers even pulled out a pepper spray and injured eight students.
Moments later, the trio fled. The police were immediately alerted, but a search has so far yielded no results.
In Görlitz, about 220 kilometers away, there were also desert scenes on Saturday night. There, too, the exuberant Abi Ball came to an abrupt halt when around 3:30 a.m. about 20 people appeared in club “L2” and immediately began to insult the guests present.
But it didn’t stop. As a police spokesman told Bild, several people in the group grabbed bottles lying around and threw them at the entrance.
Others broke the bottles and used them to track down bystanders. Five guests aged 18 to 48 were injured.
The summoned police then acted ruthlessly. Moments later, 12 Syrian, Turkish, Iraqi and Lebanese men clicked on their handcuffs near the crime scene. Two of them have since been released. The remaining rioters remain in custody.
Another tragic case occurred on Monday evening at the Abi ball: a girl († 17) fell to her death during the night during her graduation ceremony. The school class organized the celebration in a hotel in Berlin-Neukölln.
Together with a classmate, the high school graduate climbed onto the roof of the building. There the two broke through a plastic skylight and fell eight meters. The girl later died in hospital, while the boy was only slightly injured.
A graduation ceremony also recently made headlines in Switzerland. However, it was the high school graduates themselves who caused a fight. In early June, the school leaving prank escalated at the Enge cantonal school in Zurich, with students and teachers being fooled by the graduating class.
Apparently that was not the case this time. The high school graduates allegedly sprayed vinegar and soapy water directly into the teachers’ faces. Fireworks were set off among classmates.
One student even had to go to hospital. The event was therefore canceled prematurely by the Rectorate. (ceded)
