During his visit to the Pakistani capital Islamabad, in the presence of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis aLetter of intent to improve prevention and response to natural disasters in the country signed.
The Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs (EDA) announced this on Saturday afternoon. The visit of the Swiss foreign minister underscores Switzerland’s solidarity with Pakistan after the flood of the century in 2022.
The letter of intent promotes better cooperation between the two countries, in particular to pool resources, knowledge and experience in the field of disaster management.
Climate change poses major challenges to the entire region of South Asia: in Pakistan, sea levels are rising, rainfall associated with monsoons is increasing and glaciers are melting faster.
The Swiss delegation analyzed the consequences of the 2022 floods and discussed the status of the clean-up efforts with Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister, Sherry Rehman. Finally, Federal Councilor Cassis held talks with representatives of politics and business in the Pakistani capital.
Switzerland has maintained diplomatic relations with Pakistan for many years. For example, after the Pakistan-India war in 1965, Switzerland represented Pakistan’s interests in India and vice versa. With more than 230 million inhabitants, Pakistan is the fifth most populous country in the world and has enormous untapped economic potential.
Before his visit to Pakistan, EDA head Cassis had already visited the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Cassis is expected in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday, according to the EDA. There, the Federal Council will meet with the regional authorities of Sindh province, which was hit by the flood of the century in 2022, and visit Swiss companies based in the city.
