Suddenly in the red: After an Uber ride, the Ordonez couple from the US had nearly $30,000 withheld.

An American couple traveled to Costa Rica for their fifth wedding anniversary. But the dream vacation turned into an expensive nightmare on the first day. Because Dominique and Douglas Ordonez received an email that thousands of dollars were overdrawn in their account. It turned out that the Uber taxi charged $29,994 for the short taxi ride from the airport to the hotel.

On her Tiktok, Dominique Ordonez reported what happened: “Our ride with Uber cost 29,994 colones in local currency, which is equivalent to $54. However, Uber did not convert it, but deducted it 1 to 1 as dollars. And our bank just paid for it.”

“There was no security check”

Uber customer service did not feel guilty and blamed Altura Credit Union Bank for the costly mistake. But there was no understanding there either.

On the contrary: the bank would blame the couple. “We were held responsible by Altura for the fact that our daily limit was completely exceeded and there was no security check due to a foreign transaction of the horrendous amount. Because we registered the trip to Costa Rica so that we could use our bank cards,” explains Dominique Ordonez on Tiktok.

Suppose now wants to switch banks

With little money left and their bill overdrawn, the couple were stuck at their second stop on their journey. Specifically: in Guatemala. The bank employees on the phone told Dominique and Douglas that it could take up to seven days to process their complaint.

Because her tiktok went viral with more than six million clicks and local media contacted Altura Credit Union, the bug was suddenly fixed after five days. Dominique Ordonez reported to Tiktok with an update. “Suddenly the Uber ride was correctly charged and our money was back in the account. With an apology from Altura via email.” Upon their return, the couple plans to switch banks and file a civil suit for “gross negligence.” (jmh)
