People trying to save themselves on roofs, floating cars and water as far as the eye can see: the images from Zaragoza, in northeastern Spain, have it all. The capital of the Aragon region was hit by a heavy thunderstorm on Thursday afternoon. The result was torrential rain.

According to Spanish media, more than 50 liters per square meter fell. This led to severe flooding. Pictures on Twitter show the size of the storm. As the newspaper “Heraldo der Aragon” reports, numerous cars were washed away.

Dozens of people are trapped in cars

The fire brigade had to use ropes and ladders to rescue people from their cars or roofs. As reported by «El Mundo», the worst situation occurred in Via Tercer Cinturón, at the top of the bridges of the Barranco de la Muerte. Countless people were trapped there in their vehicles and there were “really really complicated moments”. Some people even clung to street trees.

Despite the heavy rain, there were no injuries, it is said. Nevertheless, conditions would have spread throughout the city.

As a result, according to the Zaragoza City Council, tram operations were interrupted and numerous bus routes were diverted. In addition to the fire brigade, the police and employees of the sanitary and supply infrastructure were also present. (dzc)
