Officially, he fell out of favor with his revolt on June 24. But the denounced Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozchin (62) enjoyed rank and fame in Russia. As new developments also show, the awkward contemporary is likely to be rehabilitated soon. Prigozhin may be the odd one out, but he also received the highest honor in the country. In Russia, it is rumored that the country’s leadership and Prigozhin will soon be reconciled.
In his homeland he was always known as an enfant terrible, who likes protocols and conventions. During raids on the houses of the mercenary chief, wigs and artificial beards were seized, on which Prigozhin shows himself in photographs. Any other strange finds? A Glock pistol given by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu (68), a mural depicting decapitated people, wads of money, cover documents, a prayer room, a doctor’s office – as well as Prigozhin’s military uniform, on which the Star of the Hero of Russia is decorated next to many orders and medals.
The Order of Heroes is the highest decoration and the highest honorary title awarded in Russia. Medal bearer Prigozhin is a Russian hero. Apparently, a lot of hard work is currently being done behind the scenes to make things right. After his attempted coup, Prigozhin would be exiled to Belarus, but he remains a free man who appears to be able to move freely in Russia.
Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, 68, told foreign journalists on Thursday: “As for Prigozhin, he is in Saint Petersburg. He is not in Belarus.” According to Lukashenko, he could say “with certainty” that Prigozhin was at large. “I spoke to him on the phone yesterday.” Prigozhin told him: “We will work for the good of Russia and do our duty to the end.”
Putin spokesman Dmitri Peskov (55) evaded the question of where Prigozhin was, who was supposed to be exiled to Belarus. According to Peskov, the Kremlin does not follow Prigozhin’s “fate” and does not have time for it. And what the Kremlin first denounced as “mutiny” on June 24 was downplayed as “confusion” by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (73) at the end of June. This was at a time when things were difficult on the Ukrainian front, where Prigozhin was doing valuable military service.
“Putin and Prigozhin will soon be reconciled,” headlines Russian columnist Lyubov Stepushowa in an analysis in Pravda, one of Russia’s oldest surviving daily newspapers. Prigozhin repeatedly causes “excitement” in Russian society. The country’s leadership and the “rebel” would soon be reconciled.
As a soldier, Prigozhin was only doing his duty, Stepushowa explains. He and his fighters would also be held in high esteem by the Russian armed forces. Nor was it an uprising against President Vladimir Putin (70).
“It would be unreasonable to lose such a combat unit,” concludes the prominent author. Stepushowa predicts that Prigozhin will soon play “the leading role in reconciliation”. The only question is what rank he will receive in the Russian Armed Forces – or what title in the Defense Ministry.
Lukashenko also indicated on Thursday that Prigozhin and Putin know and understand each other very well. A caterer for Putin, the Kremlin and the Russian armed forces, Prigozhin had been operating in the inner circle of Russian power for decades.
Lukashenko: «I don’t know everything about the relationship between Putin and Prigozhin and I don’t want to know everything. Putin knows Prigozhin much better than I do,” the Belarusian president said, adding: “Do you think Putin is outraged and will kill him tomorrow? No, that’s not going to happen.”
