Twitter is threatening to sue tech giant Meta over its new Threads platform, accusing the company of poaching former employees to develop a “copycat” app.
In a letter to the news portal Semafor, Twitter lawyer Alex Spiro, 40, writes: “Twitter intends to vigorously enforce its intellectual property rights and calls on Meta to take immediate action to prevent the use of trade secrets or other highly confidential matters. information from Twitter.” Elon Musk’s (52) company reserves the right to take legal action against Mark Zuckerberg’s (39) group.
At Meta, Twitter’s allegations are considered baseless. “No one on the Threads development team is a former Twitter employee,” an anonymous Meta source told Semafor.
Meanwhile, Meta CEO Zuckerberg is pleased with the successful launch of the new platform. The Twitter copy of the Facebook group soon has more than ten million users. The Threads app was a hit seven hours after launch, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg wrote Thursday.
Threads links to Meta’s Instagram photo and video platform and is available in the US and over 100 other countries – but not in Switzerland and the European Union. The group refers to open questions in regulations.
The launch of Threads follows particularly turbulent days for Twitter, which has been in trouble since it was acquired by tech billionaire Elon Musk. The short message service angered users this weekend with a drastic cap on the number of tweets they can see for free per day. (bab/SDA)
