Six people have died in Punjab province, Prime Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters on Wednesday.
The city of Lahore in the east was particularly hard hit by the monsoon rains and the streets were flooded. Residents fell victim to falling power lines, collapsing houses or drowned in the floods.
Meanwhile, the aid organization International Rescue Committee (IRC) warned of the serious consequences. Millions of people are at risk of their homes being washed away, the organization warned. Children are most at risk. “They are vulnerable to malnutrition due to food shortages that could be linked to another flood disaster,” the organization was quoted as saying by country director Shabnam Baloch.
In the summer of 2022, Pakistan was hit by record floods, temporarily inundating a third of the country and killing more than 1,700 people, according to official figures. A humanitarian crisis followed the floods. About 33 million people in the South Asian country were affected, according to a World Bank report.
In view of the monsoon season, Pakistan is preparing for new floods. This year, however, the Pakistani weather service expects less rain than last year.
