US President Joe Biden has promised Sweden full US support for its intended NATO membership. “Sweden will make our alliance stronger,” Biden said Wednesday at the White House in the presence of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Biden made it clear that after the stalemate of the past few months, the US cannot wait for accession. Sweden is a “capable and committed partner” that shares NATO’s values.
Kristersson replied that his country wanted protection from the military alliance. But he also believed that Sweden could contribute something to the security of NATO as a whole.
Like Finland, Sweden had applied for NATO membership in May 2022 under the impression of Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine. Finland has been a member since early April. Turkey and Hungary have yet to agree to Sweden’s accession. It is uncertain whether the blockade can be resolved before the NATO summit in Vilnius next Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Washington, Biden and Kristersson also wanted to talk about support for Ukraine, dealing with China, climate change and new technologies. (sda/dpa)
