The nuclear power plant, which was taken over by Russian troops at the beginning of March 2023, worries the Ukrainian authorities, who warn of a possible attack by Moscow

The exchange of accusations continues between Moscow and Kiev, who on this occasion accused each other of preparing the possible Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. For its part, Ukraine claims that the Russians set it up explosives on the roof of the building, while Moscow claims that Kiev is planning sabotage on the building.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admits the situation is “quite tense,” warning that possible sabotage by Kiev could have “catastrophic consequences”, although he assures that “measures are being taken” to suppress the threat. Peskov commented on the case on Wednesday to reveal what Ukrainian forces would be willing to do for propaganda purposes.

“Why would we have explosives there? It is without meaning with the aim of maintaining tension around the plant,” said Renat Karchaa, an adviser to Rosenergoatom, the Russian nuclear power plant operator, who confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was “blatantly lying” when he claimed otherwise.

For his part, Zelenskiy warned on Tuesday of a possible “provocation”, pointing to Russian security forces. Ukrainian intelligence would allegedly reveal placing explosives on the roof of the factory «Perhaps to simulate an attack on the factory. Maybe they have some other purpose,” commented the Ukrainian president Telegram. “In any case, the world sees that the only source of danger for the nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye is Russia and no one else,” he wrote.

Authorities in the area are preparing to anticipate a possible incident and they asked the population to trust only official sources for information.
