In Spain and Portugal, police have rounded up an international drug ring that allegedly supplied several European countries with cocaine from South America.
A total of 24 people were arrested in the operation in the two southwestern European countries and in Brazil, the Spanish Guardia Civil police unit announced on Wednesday. More than 800 kilograms of cocaine were also seized. The strike was successful in cooperation with Europol and the authorities in Brazil.
The gang initially brought “large amounts of cocaine” via Brazil to Málaga in southern Spain by ship, it said. According to the findings, the drug was then smuggled to other European countries, mainly in double bottom vehicles. The investigation began a year ago. Two members of the Brazilian army were among the suspects.
In recent months, the investigative successes against the cocaine mafia in Spain have been piling up. According to the police, two large gangs were broken up first in April and then in May. A total of 80 people were arrested and about three tons of cocaine seized.
In April, another operation in Galicia, in the northwest of the country, dismantled “Europe’s largest cocaine laboratory” according to the responsible authorities. The facility was run by drug dealers from Mexico and Colombia. At that time there were 18 other arrests. (SDA)
