Nuclear fear again for the largest nuclear power plant in Europe! Ukraine suspects Russia of an alleged imminent attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the south of the country. “We now have information from our secret service that the Russian army has placed objects resembling explosives on the roofs of several reactor blocks of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, 45, said in his daily video address on Tuesday evening. Possibly an attack on the power plant can be simulated and Ukraine is accused of being the mastermind. Selenski continued to speak of “dangerous provocations”.

Ukraine warns against false flag action

Earlier, the Ukrainian General Staff wrote in its daily situation report about alleged explosives on the roof of the nuclear power plant. The explosives were attached to the roofs of the third and fourth reactor blocks, but would not damage the reactors themselves, it said. Their explosion should give the impression of a shelling. So it would be a so-called false flag action.

Moscow, on the other hand, has denied and in turn accused Kiev of an alleged imminent attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. An adviser to Russian state operator Rosatom accused Kiev of preparing an “attack” on the power plant for Wednesday night. According to the adviser, “long-range precision weapons” and drones should be used.

Preparing for meltdown

Although both warring parties repeatedly accuse each other of planned provocations around the power plant, the allegations have become increasingly serious in recent times. So sharp that rescue workers in the regions around the Ukrainian cities of Kherson, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhia and Dnipro are already training for a possible nuclear emergency.

As the open source intelligence service “OSINTdefender” reported on Twitter on Tuesday night, equipment and personnel from the mobile radiation units of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations had been sighted in the cities of Enerhodar and Mariupol and not far from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. That ministry reports directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin (70).

Residents must pack emergency packages

Other measures taken in and around the plant show how serious the situation is. According to news channel Euronews, local residents would also be prepared for a nuclear emergency. Accordingly, they would be trained to pack an emergency kit and make improvised respirators. “I remember Chernobyl,” one resident told the station. “I don’t think you can really prepare for that.” He is already preparing to flee as quickly as possible in the event of a disaster.

Another resident is also concerned. “Of course we are concerned because our children and grandchildren live here,” she told Euronews.

Workers apparently pulled out of the nuclear power plant

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, Russia has recently started withdrawing workers from the power plant. At the end of June, Ukrainian military intelligence announced on Telegram that employees had until July 5 to leave the power plant occupied by Russian troops.

Zelensky calls for pressure on Russia

Internationally, there is also great concern about a nuclear meltdown. Against this backdrop, Zelensky called for international pressure on Russia to prevent an attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. “Unfortunately, there was no timely and broad response to the terrorist attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. And that can inspire the Kremlin to new evil,” said the Ukrainian head of state.

Selenski’s speech was preceded by a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron (45). He thanked Macron for his willingness to work to ensure the safety of the nuclear facility. Both spoke about the nuclear power plant, but also about arms deliveries and the upcoming NATO summit in Lithuania next week, the Ukrainian head of state said. (ter/SDA/AFP)
