The Thai island of Ko Samui is struggling with a water crisis.

Water is becoming scarce on the Thai dream island of Ko Samui. According to media reports, the reason is an ongoing drought – but coupled with ever-increasing demand as tourism booms again after the Corona crisis.

The authorities had already announced rationing from July 1 in June: in the different regions of the island, the water is only allowed to come out of the pipes alternately and daily, according to a table distributed by the local government. In chat groups, residents complained that their taps had been dry for days.

According to the authorities, supplies will only last until the end of July at the latest. Numerous reservoirs and waterfalls are at extremely low levels, the news site “The Thaiger” recently reported, speaking of a “serious water crisis”.

“We haven’t had water for a few weeks”

According to Ratchaporn Poonsawat, president of the Ko Samui Tourism Association, hotel operators and other workers in the tourism industry may soon be forced to buy fresh water from private suppliers. This would lead to increased operating costs, which could ultimately impact guests’ vacation costs, the company said. The union fears negative consequences, especially in the high season, which is just starting on Ko Samui.

“We have hardly had water in the office for a few weeks, where we do not have a tank,” British Abby, who has lived on the island for several years, told the German news agency on Wednesday. However, most resorts and hotels have large tanks, so supplies are guaranteed there so far. “The weather has been unusually hot and very dry for months, even though it rained a little over the weekend,” she said. “But that was nowhere near enough to solve the problem.” (SDA)
