Europhobe Farage denounces being victimized by the “anti-Brexit” banking industry

The controversial politician said that a bank closed one of his accounts in the United Kingdom because of his political position, but the entity assures that the decision was made because he had no money.

Nigel Farage has denounced that sectors of Britain’s all-powerful banking industry have launched a “political” persecution against him for his positions, particularly for promoting Brexit. The accusation was made by the controversial Europhobic politician when he denounced this Tuesday that Coutts bank had closed his accounts at the three-hundred-year-old financial institution “without explanation”.

“It implies a loss of status as a person and it significantly affects my career in the future and whether I can continue this country or not,” he told the BBC.

The press, however, denied that the measure was politically motivated or that it was based on the fact that the politician had received payments from the Russian state channel Russia Today, of which he was a contributor. The British media, referring to sources from that entity, assure that the closure of Farage’s accounts is due to the fact that he did not meet the conditions to have them.

Coutts is a prestigious and exclusive institution where members of the royal family keep their savings; and requires its clients to invest at least £1m (€1.18m) or have £3m (€3.5m) in savings.

The bank says it has offered Farage the chance to have a personal account, but with NatWest, its parent company.
