The square in front of Lichtenberg station will be renamed.

The area in front of the Berlin-Lichtenberg train station is called “Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz”. The name was chosen deliberately. On September 17, 2016, shoplifter Eugeniu Botnari († 34) was caught red-handed in a supermarket branch in the train station.

Botnari wanted to steal a liquor bottle, but hadn’t counted on the supermarket manager. At the back of the branch, the homeless Moldovan, who had come to Germany as a refugee in 2015, was arrested and brutally beaten by André S.* (29). This botnari wore silica sand gloves and repeatedly punched the face.

Three years in prison for branch managers

S. then filmed the images from the security camera with his mobile phone and sent them to employees. Botnari did not go to the doctor until two days after the crime. This sent him to hospital, where he succumbed to his severe head wounds a day later.

In 2017, André S. was charged with assault leading to death and sentenced to three years and three months in prison.

The Berlin state administration has now published the intended award in an official magazine. Accordingly, the Lichtenberg district office has decided on the naming on April 18, 2023. “A memorial plaque will be erected as part of the square’s naming, commemorating the inhumane act against Eugeniu Botnari and the victims of everyday right-wing violence.”

‘There are many victims who don’t get a place’

Should a square be named after a man who was known to the police “for various crimes” but was also the victim of brutal violence? A passerby told “Bild”: “Of course it is bad that he was killed. But I don’t think it’s right to be named after someone who stole.” Another said: “From my point of view, it was more of a watchfulness thing. There are a lot of victims who don’t get a place.”

The naming of the previously unnamed square was initiated by the Greens in the Lichtenberg district. They were supported by the left and the SPD. CDU, AfD and FDP voted against the plan. (ter)
