There has been no trace of Russian Air Force Chief Sergey Surovikin for about a week.

The failed uprising of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (62) made headlines. However, Prigozhin seems to be in good hands. Since the march to Moscow, another person has been in the picture: Air Force Chief Sergei Surovikin (56). There’s been no trace of him for days. His family is also said to have no contact with him at the moment.

What happened? According to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, 55, the Kremlin has not commented on Surovikin’s whereabouts. It was a matter for the Defense Ministry, Peskov said in late June, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

After the disappearance, it was reported that the general may have been arrested and imprisoned. The reason: he would have been aware of the uprising plan of the Wagner troop. When asked whether President Vladimir Putin (70) continued to trust Surovikin, Peskov further said that the Kremlin chief worked as commander-in-chief with Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu (68) and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov (67). . The Ministry must comment on their subordinates. But there was no answer either.

Reportedly voluntary in solitary confinement

Although Surovikin is considered an ally of Prigozhin, he had publicly sided with the power apparatus in Moscow that evening. In a video message, Surovikin called Prigozhin to end the power struggle. It was the last sign of life. Then he suddenly disappeared.

On June 24, Wagner boss Prigozhin occupied the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, among other places, and then marched his fighters in the direction of Moscow. Surprisingly, he gave up about 200 kilometers from the Russian capital. The Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko (68) mediated in the conflict. Putin assured Prigozhin and his mercenaries of impunity.

Surovikin, on the other hand, would be in prison. Russian media report this on the basis of informants. There is no confirmation for this. Now the rumor mill is spinning. Two people from his close circle allegedly betrayed him and provided evidence that the general actively supported the Wagner boss in his uprising. One of them is said to have been a personal assistant, according to Telegram. The Russian secret service FSB has been called in and is investigating the matter. There is no official investigation against Surovikin. He is currently in solitary confinement, reportedly of his own free will. His family had been promised that he would be able to go home soon. We are talking about the 4th of July, his wife’s birthday. (lia/AFP)
