St. Gallen wanted camper killed: suspect was already a criminal at home

The police investigated the murder in Jestetten for more than two weeks, until a special unit finally got hold of a Lidl parking lot in Lottstetten (D): on June 22, they arrested a 39-year-old construction worker from Latvia.

He is strongly suspected of having killed the 31-year-old wild camper from eastern Switzerland on the banks of the Rhine with a large branch. The East Swiss wanted to spend the night there in a hammock and died on the spot from the severe abuse.

The background to the fact is still unclear. Did the two know each other? Did they meet by chance? Did they have a fight? The suspect is stuck and silent. The spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office now confirms to the “Tages-Anzeiger” that the man has already committed a criminal offense in his home country. “There is evidence of criminally relevant past behavior of the suspect in Latvia, which is now being established through international legal assistance.”

Several colleagues at the construction site reported to the newspaper that the suspect committed a crime in Latvia, but they did not know more details. They indicate that the man would often have been drunk. “When you smoke weed and drink vodka, something like this happens,” the Tages-Anzeiger quoted.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the man is in possession of a Latvian non-citizen passport. Members of the Russian-speaking minority are not naturalized in Latvia, but are given this passport. The 39-year-old has to answer for manslaughter and could receive up to ten years in prison. (new)
