Balkan countries must align visa policies

Adjusting the rules would certainly help, the federal councilor said before the ministerial meeting on Friday. Many migrants are currently entering the Schengen area via Serbia.

Because people from India, Bangladesh or Tunisia do not need a visa to travel to Serbia. Many of them then move on to the EU with the help of smugglers. Although this visa policy is not new, according to Keller-Sutter, the number of migrants has risen sharply.

According to Justice Minister Keller-Sutter, about 80 percent of asylum applications in Austria are migrants from Serbia.

In addition, more asylum seekers from Syria and Afghanistan, who previously resided in Turkey and Greece, are coming to Western Europe, she said.

The head of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJP) also signed a migration agreement with Greek minister Notis Mitarakis on Friday as part of Switzerland’s contribution to cohesion.
