In view of the ongoing counter-offensive against the aggressor Russia, Ukraine reports heavy fighting on several front areas, especially in the east. Russian forces attacked Avdiivka, Mariinka and Lyman in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar wrote on Telegram on Sunday. The occupiers also advanced near Swatowe in the neighboring Luhansk region. “There is fierce fighting there. (…) The situation is quite complicated.”
Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj visited the Black Sea port city of Odessa. In Russia, an explosion occurred not far from a military airfield. Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian offensive war for more than 16 months.

Despite the difficult situation, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Maljar also reported on minor successes. Not far from Bachmut, their own army advances and has “partial successes,” she wrote. Also in the south, Ukrainian troops advanced towards the cities of Berdyansk and Melitopol “in heavy fighting, but gradually”. Maljar spoke of “violent enemy resistance”.
Meanwhile, during a visit to the port city of Odessa, President Zelenskyy confirmed the planned liberation of the currently occupied areas in the south. “The enemy will certainly not dictate the conditions in the Black Sea,” he said in a video message on the occasion of Ukrainian Naval Forces Day.
Zelenskyy also published videos from Odessa on Telegram, showing him meeting commanders and visiting wounded soldiers in a hospital. “Together we will win,” he stressed. “Ukrainian coasts will never tolerate the occupiers!”
Russia currently occupies about 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory. Kiev now also wants to liberate the occupied territories with Western military aid.
According to media reports, a large explosion occurred not far from a military airfield in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar. The Telegram social network published photos of a crater reportedly measuring 10 by 4 meters and reportedly formed near the airport in the city of Primorsko-Akhtarsk. Krasnodar governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the “incident” is under investigation. There are no casualties, he wrote.
A center for the prosecution of Russian aggression in Ukraine will open at the EU’s judicial authority, Eurojust, on Monday. Evidence will be collected in the center at the authority’s headquarters in The Hague, but targeted charges against suspected perpetrators will also be prepared.
