Violent Twitter Reactions Over New Condiment: Pepsi Launches Colachup, Cola-Flavored Ketchup For US National Day

Pepsi is launching Colachup, a cola-flavored ketchup, for the US National Day on Tuesday. A new iconic American classic – or just an aversion to good taste?

The well-known American chef Sarma Melngailis (50) calls it “another reason to emigrate to Europe”: For the American national holiday on July 4, beverage giant Pepsi has announced a new kind of ketchup: Colachup. That’s exactly what it sounds like. Ketchup with cola.

Pepsi also takes the wind out of critics by saying that America is once again proving its culinary narrow-mindedness. The beverage brand is partnering with the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to develop the new condiment, which the beverage brand says is ideal for hot dogs.

Pepsi is wildly enthusiastic about its apparently original American creation. «End the spice wars, the undisputed champion is here – Pepsi Colachup. Sweet, salty and ready to be savored in selected baseball stadiums on July 4th,” the ad campaign lures.

“The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Are Here”

Colachup was invented to emphasize how well the brown fizzy drink and hot dogs go together, said Jenny Danzi, Pepsi marketing director, in a press release: “An incomparably delicious creation that seamlessly blends a condiment with the ultimate hot dog drink and provides a unified taste experience.”

The concept is “as simple as it is creative,” says David Kamen of Colachup’s development partner, the CIA. “Pepsi’s signature flavor and vibrant citrus blend enhance the ketchup’s bright and spicy qualities while balancing the hot dog’s smoky notes.” It’s “a whole new way to enjoy two American classics.”

Opinions are divided on Twitter. “That’s it, the four horsemen of the apocalypse are here,” says one user. “I like Pepsi, but that’s too hard for me,” is another response. Someone dryly remarks, “It’s things like this that make people like Coke more.” Others can’t seem to get enough ketchup and cola – and may be disappointed. It is not known whether Colachup will ever be available in supermarkets. (kes)
