At least 719 arrested for rioting in France

At least 719 people were arrested and 45 police officers were injured for the fifth consecutive night riots in France for the death of a teenager at the hands of a policeman, although according to the French government it was a “peaceful” night than previous ones.

A quieter night thanks to the determined action of law enforcement, who made 427 arrests since the beginning of the evening, he said French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, through your account Twitter at 03:00 AM (01:00 GMT).

Five hours later, the diagnosis of fewer incidents was confirmed by his portfolio by updating the total number of arrests for the night to 719, while the previous day at the same time the MUP reported 994 (subsequently increased to 1311).

The result of the conflict also included 871 fires on public roads and damage to 74 buildings, figures less than half of the previous day.

To try to maintain order, the government decided to keep a large police force of 45,000 agents deployed on the streets, with a particular presence in places such as Marseille and Lyon, which had requested reinforcements in view of the fierce fighting they had suffered the previous night.

The night was calmer in those cities too, although scenes of tension were still seen. Likewise, in Paris, a large police contingent had to intervene to stop the incidents in avenue des Champs Elysees a little before midnight.

The trigger for this wave of unrest was the death of a 17-year-old youth of Arab origin named Nahel, who was fatally shot by a police officer while trying to escape from a police checkpoint in Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris, last June 27.

The images of the incident, recorded by witnesses, caused strong indignation in the country, which turned into riots, especially in popular districts of big cities and in the metropolitan area of Paris.

Mladić’s funeral was held this Saturday in Nanterre in privacy, at the request of the family, who wanted a day of “discretion” and “recollection”
