She would only love God, but Theresa G.* (43) fell in love with a priest. A disabled nun was kicked out of her Texas convent on June 1 for breaking her vow of chastity. While she admits to having sex with a priest, she claims they were never physically intimate. Sexting is sending text messages with sexual content, sexual photos or videos. That is why G. is also going to court and suing her ex-boss for “unreasonable dismissal” and damage to her reputation, American media report.
G. had led the Carmelite convent as Mother Superior. Until Bishop Michael O.* heard rumors about the 43-year-old’s affair. He started investigating. According to court records, he forced the nun to hand over her work laptop and cell phone to him. Church investigators found “challenging” messages between the head nun, who was in a wheelchair, and a priest named Father B.* from Montana.
G. openly admitted to the bishop that he had “made a big mistake”. Regretfully, she confessed to her unchaste conversations over the phone and video chat with the priest. But she insisted she had never met the minister in person. Therefore, there was no physical affair and she did not break her vow of chastity. Nevertheless, the bishop decided to throw out the head nun. Whereupon G. went before a secular civil court and demanded damages of at least 1 million dollars for invasion of her privacy and defamation. Plus: she reclaims her old position as head of the monastery.
She testified in court that strong anti-seizure drugs had impaired her judgment. She accuses the bishop of faking her confessions.
It is still unclear whether there will be any negotiations at all. The responsible diocese in the US has requested that the Catholic sex scandal be internally regulated by the Vatican. Therefore, a judge must first decide whether a US court retains jurisdiction over the case. (jmh)
