Neutrality helped Putin: Former German President Gauck criticizes neutrality

Former German President Joachim Gauck questions Switzerland’s neutrality. (archive image)

Gauck has no problem with non-alignment and one does not have to belong to NATO, he said in an interview published Saturday. But in a situation like the one in Ukraine, “in which it is so clear who is the perpetrator and who is the victim,” he said he had difficulty with neutrality.

Still, Gauck said his compatriots admired Switzerland. And harbored a desire “to have a more peaceful history of my own, or to be neutral.”

He is skeptical about direct democracy in Switzerland. However, “the coexistence of the different language groups and denominations impresses me,” he said. He wanted Switzerland – “with this long-standing unity in diversity” – to become more integrated into the European Union.
