The administration of the Croatian tourist stronghold of Dubrovnik advises its visitors not to drag trolley suitcases when walking through the old town.
A spokeswoman for the city council confirmed this on Friday in response to a request from the DPA news agency. “It is not about a municipal ordinance, but about a recommendation, as stated in a promotional video,” the spokeswoman said on Friday.
Dubrovnik’s Old Town largely dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Dragged suitcases on wheels create an unbearable noise on the cobblestones for the residents. The promotional video and the recommendation not to pack any bags are part of a program launched in 2017 called ‘Respect for the City’, the spokeswoman said.
Certain rules have been in force for some time, such as the prohibition to walk through the old city in swimwear or to eat and drink on the steps of cultural monuments. Mayor Mato Frankovic caused a sensation at the end of May when he announced a ban on trolleys in the old town in an interview with the Zagreb daily newspaper “Jutarnji List”.
Frankovic, a dedicated pioneer of the “Respect for the City” program, also announced that starting November, lockers would be installed at the entrances to the old city. Tourists living in the old town are then obliged to leave their luggage there for a municipal service to take it to their accommodation.
“The city police officers do not impose penalties, they only provide information to visitors,” said the spokeswoman. This is done so that they can experience Dubrovnik in the best and most authentic way. The picturesque Croatian town and former sea fortress has been a tourist attraction for many years. In the previous year, the city of 42,000 inhabitants recorded 3.8 million overnight stays. (sda/dpa)
