Greta Thunberg traveled to Ukraine with an international working group. The climate activist met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg (20) traveled to Ukraine with an international working group to map out the environmental damage caused by the Russian offensive. “We need your professional help,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, 45, who received the group in Kiev on Thursday. In particular, he pointed to the horrific devastation in the southern Kherson region caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka dam and subsequent flooding since early June.

“I don’t think the world’s response to this ecocide was enough,” Thunberg said, according to Ukrainian media. “I don’t think any reaction can be enough. Because there are simply no words to describe this brutality.” Zelensky also reported on drinking and industrial water supply problems in Kherson and in the neighboring Mykolayiv region. The agricultural sector and the biological diversity of the region are also affected.

The environmental working group also consisted of the Swedish former deputy prime minister Margot Wallström, the Irish former president Mary Robinson and the Finnish vice-president of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala. The group’s work is aimed at helping Russia make good the damage caused by the invasion more than 16 months ago. (SDA)
