Alexis Tsipras resigned from the leadership of SYRIZA after the defeat in the Greek elections

Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced this Thursday resignation at the head of SYRIZA after the great defeat of this party in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, in which the New Democracy of Kyriakos Mitsotakis won an absolute majority.

Tsipras, who aspired to lead a progressive coalition, proposed renewing the leadership of the formation with which he came to power in 2015. Thus he hopes to move towards a “new SYRIZA” that responds to challenges, proud of what has been achieved in the phase that described himself as “very difficult”, characterized by financial rescue.

The previous leader confirmed it will not be a candidate in the future internal processat the end of the meeting of the formation’s executive board in Athens, the channel reports Emergency.

SYRIZA won 17.84 percent of the vote and 47 seats in the last election, compared to the 158 seats New Democracy won thanks to 40.56 percent of the vote. The vote marked record level of abstinence —over 47%— and the entry of eight parties into the Parliament.
