German politician sang “Layla” at a festival and was criticized – now he’s fighting the Romans romping: tourist carves names in the Colosseum

Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther commented on his singing along to the sexist party hit “Layla” in a beer tent during Kiel Week. In an interview with the newspapers of the Funke media group, the CDU politician defended his behavior, emphasizing that he was asked to do so by the band on stage and that the atmosphere in the tent was exuberant.

To the objection that “Layla” was perceived by many as sexist, he replied: “We have also sung other songs.” He explained that he was very confident about the lyrics: “The lyrics are not too complicated.”

Günther continues: “It was a fun night, a great band and lots of people just having fun.” Video recordings show how Günther sings on stage in the overcrowded Bavarian tent during Kiel Week about “Layla the madam”: “She is prettier, younger, hornier”.

The 49-year-old was also criticized for this by the Green coalition partner. DJ Robin & Schürze’s summer hit was number one for nine weeks last year and was officially named hit of the year in December.

The song sparked a sexism debate and was banned in some folk festivals. A government spokesman said after Günther’s singing performance that the prime minister had visited the Bayern tent as part of a private Kiel Week tour. Günther always sang along with festive songs at public occasions.
