Individual burned a copy of the Quran on Wednesday next to a mosque in Stockholm, in the first such act authorized by Swedish police after the courts recently overturned an earlier ban by the authorities citing security reasons.
Act, which they attended about 200 people and with a strong police presence, it passed without incident seriously, although one person was detained by the police for carrying a stone in his hand.
Salwan Momika, of Iraqi descent, said his intention was to criticize Islam before he put bacon on the Koran and set it on fire, the tabloid reported. aftonbladet in its digital edition.
The protest came on a day when Muslim believers around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.
The burning of a copy of the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy last January by Danish-Swedish far-right Rasmus Paludan sparked a wave of protests abroad, including in Turkey, which continues to block the ratification of Sweden’s entry into NATO, approved a year ago at a summit in Madrid.
In February, Swedish police decided to deny permission to two requests to burn the Koran, alluding to the risks such acts could pose to Sweden’s security, but the judiciary rejected that argument on several occasions in the following months.
“Problems of order and security referred to by the Police they do not have a clear enough connection with the planned gatherings to refuse the permit“, the administrative appeals court said in a ruling earlier this month.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called today’s act “provocative” and admitted that it is “legal, but not ideal.”
“I will not give troublemakers the attention they want. They tend to provoke and offend others. My focus is on Sweden joining NATO as soon as possible, because it is important for the security of Sweden and our region,” he said.
Sweden and Finland, which ended their historic military non-alignment following Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, accepted their bids for NATO membership a year ago after a last-minute deal with Turkey to lift its veto.
But while Finland was admitted to full membership at the beginning of April, Sweden is still waiting to overcome Turkish and Hungarian reluctance.
Budapest criticized the “hostile” attitude of Sweden and pointed out that it is necessary to resolve “a large number of complaints”, while Ankara blames this Nordic country for not extraditing people associated with organizations it considers terrorist, especially from the Kurdish sphere.
