German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (63) visited Lithuania on Monday. He announced that Germany wanted to provide military support to the Baltic country, which borders Belarus and Russia. To that end, 4,000 Bundeswehr soldiers will be permanently stationed in the country to provide protection against Russia. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (64) was also there in preparation for the NATO summit in July.
And someone else was in Lithuania. A curious figure. A man in armor. At a military exercise attended by Pistorius and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda (59), the knight was also in the audience – in full equipment. He wore a helmet, armor and sword.
Images from the German broadcaster RTL show how the knight is sitting a few rows behind the Minister of Defense. Later he walked around the grounds. When ZDF conducted an interview with Bundeswehr general Christian Nawrat (54) for the show ‘heute’, the costumed man even stepped through the photo – much to the surprise of many viewers.
Since then there has been wild speculation on Twitter about what the knight stands for. The strange appearance causes a lot of fuss. “I’ve already heard that the Bundeswehr’s equipment is outdated, but phew,” reads one comment. The incident plunged others into an existential crisis: “This little moment. That’s the proof. We actually live in the Matrix.” However, it is unclear who the disguised man is and what he was supposed to do at the event.
It’s not the first time a quirky medieval figure has attracted attention on a serious occasion. At the beginning of this year, a monk made headlines during a demonstration in Lützerath (D). He pushed over a police officer who was stuck in the mud. His identity is also unknown so far.
