“All I know is that I didn’t do anything wrong,” Trump told Fox News (local time) on Tuesday. It’s another “scam”, a “disgrace” and “electoral interference”. The sound recording, which the Republican is still asking for an explanation, was published by American media on Monday.
In mid-June, Trump was indicted at the federal level for storing top secret government documents on his Mar-a-Lago property and failing to return them when requested. On the 2021 recording that has now been released, Trump is talking about papers that he apparently shows to interlocutors. Specifically, it appears to be a classified Pentagon document on Iran. “It’s strictly confidential, secret,” says the ex-president.
Trump is now increasingly caught up in contradictions. On the recording he says:
He apparently means the documents he shows his interlocutors. The Republican had previously repeatedly claimed that the classified information was no longer classified after it was brought to Mar-a-Lago, Florida. However, the 77-year-old has not yet provided a precise explanation of what kind of document he actually showed at the time. Instead, he told Fox News, “I had a whole desk full of papers, mostly newspaper articles.”
The existence of the recording was already known in principle – its transcription is a central part of the indictment against Trump. What is new is that it can now be listened to by everyone. Two weeks ago, Trump was due to appear in person before a federal court in Miami. He pleaded “not guilty”. It was the first time a former US president had appeared in federal court to face charges.
