She thought she was kidnapped to Mexico: Woman shoots her Uber driver in the US

An American woman wanted to take an Uber to her boyfriend in El Paso. On the way, she shot and killed her driver.

Guns continue to cause tragic deaths in the United States. The same in the state of Texas. There, a 52-year-old Uber driver was shot dead – even though he did everything right.

Phoebe C.*, 48, of Kentucky booked an Uber ride to El Paso in mid-June to visit her boyfriend. The city is located in the south of the US state of Texas, right on the border with Mexico. Your driver: Daniel P.*. It would be the last ride of the day. But the long-awaited end of the work never came.

Shot cold

On Route 54, C. saw street signs that read “Juarez, Mexico.” The 48-year-old thought she was being kidnapped and took a gun from her purse, NBC News reports. She shot her driver in the back of the head, freezing cold. The car then crashed into a guardrail and came to a stop.

The woman did not warn the emergency doctor, but first sent her boyfriend photos of the crime. When the rescuers later arrived on the scene, all help came too late. P. was declared brain dead in the hospital.

And as it turned out, her suspicion of kidnapping was probably unfounded. US police explained: “The road they were traveling on is a normal route”. There was no evidence of a kidnapping. Since El Paso is right next to Juarez, it makes sense that the city was advertised.

Family learned of the death through the media

Meanwhile, P.’s family waited in vain for his return. She only learned about the tragedy through US media, as a niece says: “His family called all the hospitals to ask if he was there. And then someone mentioned the article that came out about an Uber driver being shot. They called the police from El Paso and then found out it was him.”

His family eventually decided to turn off the life support equipment. The niece explains: “Basically, he would only have been in a vegetative state. We didn’t want to see him suffer. We didn’t want him to live his life like that.”

C. was now accused of murder. “I wish she had spoken up and asked questions and not acted impulsively. Because she not only ruined our lives, but hers as well,” said the niece. (Mrs)
