98-year-old Frenchman breaks silence: search for 47 shot Nazi soldiers begins Is this the end of Wagner? What speaks for – and what speaks against

The search for 47 Wehrmacht soldiers shot to death starts on Tuesday in the south of France. A former French resistance fighter broke the silence about the mass shooting of prisoners of war in World War II and thus launched the investigation.

As the broadcaster France 3 reported, the alleged mass grave should first be located with a ground radar on Friday. If the Germans are found at the suspected site, the German War Graves Commission will arrange for exhumation and burial in a German military cemetery, the French defense ministry had announced.

The Germans had been shot down in June 1944 following a Waffen SS massacre of the population of Tulle and the destruction of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, a war crime that became a symbol of Nazi barbarism in France. It was common knowledge that the Germans and a French woman accused of collaboration were shot dead in a forest area. However, everyone involved had remained silent about the circumstances for the rest of their lives. The last remaining witness recently broke his silence at the age of 98.

Accordingly, those shots should rest in two mass graves. One with eleven bodies was said to have been found in 1967 in great secrecy. The rest of the dead are said to have been buried underground about 100 yards away. (sda/dpa)
