In a speech on state television, Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) addressed his people on Monday evening.
It seems that the Kremlin ruler wanted to appease the nation with his speech. He thanked the Russians for their restraint, unity and patriotism. “I thank all the soldiers, secret service employees, who stood in the way of the insurgents,” Putin said.
Putin has made a conciliatory statement about Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (62) and his troops. The “overwhelming majority” of the Wagner company are patriots of Russia.
The head of the Kremlin approves the withdrawal of the Wagner troops: “By returning, they avoided further bloodshed,” Putin continued.
The Russian leader also assured his people that all necessary decisions to neutralize the threat had been made from the start. “The mutiny would have been crushed anyway.” The reason: the organizers recognized that their actions were criminal.
Those who organized the “mutiny” wanted Russia to lose “and our society to be drowned in blood, but they miscalculated”.
It is now up to the Wagner mercenaries to decide whether to stay in Belarus or sign a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry.
Any attempt to create chaos in Russia is doomed, the president stressed. “The organizers of the uprising, who betrayed the country, also betrayed those who were on their side,” Putin said.
At the end of his speech, Putin also thanked Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko (68) for mediating the conflict with Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. Prigozhin is said to have found shelter in Belarus.
As seen on a Telegram channel, Lukashenko also wants to give a speech on Tuesday. (dzc)
