Shein is one of the biggest fast fashion sinners of our time. The company, headquartered in China, sells clothing at extremely low prices (and of comparably low quality) all over the world. Now Shein wants to polish his image. For this, the company invited influencers to one of their factories in China to show what it really looks like. However, the shot failed miserably.
The image project ran under the name “Shein 101 – On the Road”. Several 40-second videos have been posted to Shein’s YouTube channel over the past few days. The clips show the journey of the content creators. Luxurious hotel rooms, delicious food and radiant employees are the protagonists in the clips.
Shein also looks so shiny on the channel of the influencer itsdestene_, who took part in the trip. On her TikTok account, the fashion blogger showed her followers insights into the journey. She also talks about the working conditions that prevail in the company. These appear to be quite normal. The workers would work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and lived no further than 15 minutes from the company. In addition, the workers in the corridors “don’t even sweat”.
Also on the scene was the TikToker Danidmc. Also on her channel, daily life in the Chinese factory seems very normal and even funny. In her videos, Dani describes herself as an “independent thinker”, therefore it can be ruled out that she only utters the positive words because of the collaboration. Or?
Probably not. It does not say that the influencer is paid to participate in the trip, make videos about it and talk about it. Why there is no negative comment then probably speaks for itself. For example, the company is known for sending influencers clothing of better quality than ‘normal’ customers receive. It is difficult to assume that the company visited does not reflect reality.
During the tour of the factory, it was repeatedly emphasized that the US (where the influencers come from) has a wrong idea of what it is like in Chinese factories. This is not in doubt. Critical questions would have been asked, but this is not recorded. It would be interesting to know how Shein can be so cheap when the working conditions are so good? Or that all companies look like the one being visited.
Dozens of users on TikTok are now asking themselves these questions. Shein’s influencer event is getting a lot of criticism there. Many makers describe the whole thing as propaganda and call on their followers to boycott Shein.
The influencers who participated in the trip also got a lot out of the shitstorm. Among his destene_ videos, comments like, “You should be ashamed to support a company like this” or “It’s all just propaganda. They show you what you need to see.”
