14 others were injured, the national disaster service reported on site on Monday. According to a spokesperson, several field workers were among the dead who were struck by lightning.

Pakistan is now experiencing its first monsoon rains after last week’s heat wave, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees in some parts of the country. In this regard, Climate Protection Secretary Sherry Rehman had already warned on social media on Saturday about flooding and associated landslides in several provinces.

This year, however, meteorologists expect a monsoon with below-average precipitation in the South Asian country. Last year, Pakistan experienced record floods that inundated at times as much as a third of the country and claimed the lives of more than 1,700 people, according to official figures.
