Conflict in Sudan: New reports of heavy fighting in Khartoum Conflict in Sudan: New reports of heavy fighting in Khartoum

According to eyewitnesses, there were clashes between the paramilitary group RSF and the army in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Monday.

There had been airstrikes and artillery fire. The RSF launched an attack on Sunday on the headquarters of the Central Reserve Police, a military unit affiliated with the military. On Monday evening, the RSF announced on Twitter that it had taken over the headquarters and captured weapons. According to eyewitnesses, the army then regained control of the building. This information could not be independently verified.

In Sudan, paramilitaries led by former deputy ruler Mohammed Hamdan Daglo have been battling forces led by the de facto head of state Abdel Fattah al-Burhan since mid-April. The two generals seized power together in 2019 and 2021, but later fell apart.

As a reporter from the German news agency in Khartoum reported, many citizens have now fled the capital. The humanitarian situation in the city is devastating, as almost all hospitals are out of order. About 2.5 million people across the country have been displaced by the fighting, with about half a million living abroad. (saw/sda/dpa)
