“We need cooperation, especially cooperation between China and the United States,” Macron said in an interview with US broadcaster CNN on Sunday.
For him, the top priority on a global level is solving existing crises and combating inequality, poverty and climate change. According to Macron, the Paris climate agreement was signed in 2015 because then US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping managed to reach an agreement.
Macron caused a stir with interview statements after his visit to China in early April. At the time, he encouraged Europe to take a more independent course on the Taiwan issue and called for equal distance from China and the United States. Otherwise, Europe risks becoming a “vassal” between the US and China.
Beijing sees the democratically governed island republic of Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic. At the time, the White House downplayed Macron’s statements and praised cooperation with France. (sda/dpa)
