Christine Dawood has given her first BBC interview since the drama.

He took his Rubik’s Cube with him everywhere: Suleman (†19), the son of the very wealthy entrepreneur Shahzada Dawood (†48), was inseparably linked to the Rubik’s Cube, as it is called in English-speaking countries. He managed to solve the cube in less than 12 seconds.

He took the cube into death. He had planned a world record aboard the Titan. That is what his mother Christine says in the first interview since the underwater drama. She tells the BBC: “He said, ‘I’m going to solve the Rubik’s cube at 3,700 meters below sea level on the Titanic’.”

“It went downhill from there”

His father Shahzada also brought a camera for this moment. He wanted to film the experiment and then show it to the Guinness World Records organization so that it would receive official status.

Christine Dawood and her daughter Alina, 17, were aboard Titan’s escort ship Polar Prince when communication with the submarine was lost. “At the time I didn’t understand what that meant — and it just went downhill from there,” she said.

‘He really wanted to go’

In fact, she would like to dive to the wreck with her husband. The first planned trip was canceled due to the pandemic – then she made way for her son. “He really wanted to come with us.”

Before the dive, they hugged and joked. In an interview, she says, “I was really happy for both of them because they’ve wanted to do this for a long time.” When the rescue operation began, initial hope turned to despair.

“That’s when I lost hope”

After the 96-hour mark had passed, this moment had arrived. It was then that she sent a message to her family. “I wrote, ‘I’m preparing for the worst.’ At that point I lost hope.”

Her daughter lasted longer, only when the coastguard called did she give up hope. “Then they told us they found debris.” She does not want to talk about the investigation. She doesn’t know if she will ever be able to cope with the loss. “I really, really miss her.” (new)

investigation started

The US Coast Guard is also looking into the cause of the accident after the confirmed death of the five occupants of the submarine “Titan”. “The focus of the investigation is on recovering objects from the seabed,” Jason Neubauer, chief investigator for the Coast Guard, said Sunday (local time) at a news conference in St. John’s on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. They are also currently conducting interviews at the Port of St. John’s and are in the evidence preservation phase.

When asked about the possible recovery of the bodies, Neubauer said only: “I will not go into the details of the recovery work. But we are taking every precaution on site in case we encounter human remains.”

The research is being conducted with international partners — including the Canadian Traffic Safety Authority, Neubauer said. At the conclusion of the investigation, the U.S. Coast Guard may, if necessary, make recommendations to the responsible authorities for civil or criminal proceedings. The Canadian police had previously announced that they were conducting a criminal investigation. There is currently no suspicion of criminal activity, it said.
