A successor is being sought for the conservative state and government leader Alejandro Giammattei, who, according to the constitution, was no longer allowed to stand for election after four years.
According to the polls, none of the 22 presidential candidates would have an absolute majority. Then there would be a second round on August 20 between the two strongest candidates. The wife of former president Sandra Torres of the social-democratic party UNE was in the lead with 21.3 percent in the most recent poll by the newspaper “Prensa Libre”. She was followed by centre-right former diplomat Edmond Mulet and right-wing politician Zury Ríos, daughter of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-1983).
Opposition and independent experts doubted whether the elections had been conducted in fair conditions. Recognized exiled former corruption investigators and activists spoke of a “pact of the corrupt” – an informal alliance between political, economic, legal and criminal actors to protect their own interests.
