A cold front passed through Switzerland on Friday night. This was preceded by a strong storm front, which on Thursday afternoon caused gusts of wind, hail and a lot of precipitation not only in Switzerland, but also in large parts of Germany and France.
According to MeteoNews, most precipitation fell in Glarnerland and on the eastern northern slope of the Alps, but also in Valais and north-western Switzerland. A new rain record was even set in Basel, writes SRF Meteo.
a strong #Thunderstorm brought in tonight #Basel a new #rain record: 18.2 mm fell in 10 minutes. The old record from 1991 was broken by 0.1 mm. On the airport #BaselMulhouse became one too #Hurricane-Rest of 129 km/h measured. ^ Rev pic.twitter.com/PYIVy3xn3u

In Vaud there were traffic delays due to fallen trees, but otherwise no major damage is known, reports SRF Meteo.

With the exception of western and northwestern Switzerland, the thunderstorms today were less pronounced than could be assumed on the basis of the weather models. Possible reasons and where it was still enough for a new record -> https://t.co/FHVueb3FOG (me) pic.twitter.com/akf2fr9qsd

In Germany, the storm front raged a lot more violently, several states in the west, center and northeast were hit by the storms. In Lower Saxony, part of the traffic was paralyzed by the heavy rainfall: streets and shops were flooded and trams and cars were stuck.

As the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” writes, train traffic was also seriously disrupted: “Many important railway lines such as Fulda-Kassel-Göttingen or Frankfurt-Mainz-Wiesbaden have been closed since Thursday evening due to flooded tracks and damaged overhead wires. A so-called “super cell” discharged hailstones the size of a golf ball and fallen trees fell over the Hessian city of Kassel, as well as in other regions.

For Germany, tornado warnings were even issued in advance. Occasionally there were also tornadoes, even if they were hard to see, like in this video:
a #Tornado at least there was yesterday, even if it was an F0 – the one in Cologne-Pesch, it made contact with the ground and was therefore a real tornado, thanks to Jens Grenzhäuser for watching at the right time!#Storm pic.twitter.com/YgiR6RENyt

After Kassel, the heavy thunderstorm with enormous rainfall also hit Braunschweig: flooded cellars, floating cars and numerous firefighting operations in the city centre.
