For fear of attacks: Putin has the warship repainted

Poor camouflage can be deadly in war. Conversely, if you can’t be seen, you can’t be attacked. That is why hiding, camouflage and deceit are the most important thing in the war in Ukraine. Due to the ever-improving technology, camouflage has to keep pace with progress.

The Russian army has also understood this. That is why President Vladimir Putin (70) wants to protect his most powerful warship against a possible Ukrainian attack in the Black Sea. As the Osint portal “Naval News” writes, the “Admiral Essen” is currently being repainted.

Dark paint on bow and stern

However, the entire 125-meter warship was not given a facelift. At the moment only the bow and stern are being painted. As satellite images show, the once gray areas have been painted over with a dark color to confuse opponents.

This is intended to prevent attacks by the Ukrainian Navy against Russian naval vessels. After Ukraine sank the Russian warship Moskva last year, Russia must now protect the remaining most capable ships.

With the new paint, the shape of the ship becomes more difficult to see. Russia now hopes to use the new camouflage to create confusion and mislead would-be attackers.

Innovative camouflage methods

In general, the camouflage of military equipment is becoming more and more important. With digitization, enemy targets can now be detected in space based on their thermal radiation or by military satellites, the “Spiegel” writes. That is why the military specialists have to keep coming up with new camouflage functions.

In fact, a new technology is being developed with multispectral camouflage: infrared or radar radiation is also rejected, even if man and machine were to move – an “all-in-one” solution, so to speak”. However, this is still being researched.

However, experts dispute whether Russia can actually fend off attacks by the Ukrainians with the new navy colours. Some interpret the repainting as progressive military thinking – others see it as an act of desperation by Putin. (lia)
