Bundesrat sets benchmarks EU negotiating mandate This map shows where refugees are disappearing in the Mediterranean

The Bundesrat has approved the benchmarks for a negotiating mandate with the EU. By the end of this year, he wants to prepare to adopt a negotiating mandate, as he announced.

The key figures are confidential, the Federal Council said in a statement on Wednesday. They formed the core of the possible negotiations, he wrote in his account. The Bundesrat wants to stabilize relations with the EU and ensure unimpeded participation in the internal market.

According to the announcement, he plans to sign two more agreements with the EU, an electricity deal and an agreement on food safety. He also aims for a cooperation agreement in the health sector and systematic and full participation of Switzerland in future EU programmes.

Another concern of the Federal Council is to unblock participation in the research program “Horizon Europe”. Switzerland has been left out of this program since the Federal Council broke off negotiations with Brussels on an institutional framework agreement more than two years ago. (saw/sda)
