41 women died after a fight in a prison in Honduras

The Honduran Public Ministry confirmed at least one death 41 women after the fight took place this Tuesday at the Center for Social Adaptation of Women (CEFAS). “Initially we were given a number of 25 people, but we were told that it was a preliminary number. Now the forensic medicine teams are giving us another preliminary figure, (…) they are telling us about 41 people,” Ministry of Public Affairs spokesman Yuri Mora said in statements collected by the newspaper Timereports Europa Press.

A fight reportedly broke out between inmates from Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Gang 18. According to preliminary information, a group of Gang 18 members started shooting, and later set fire to several prison modules. All victims are women between the ages of 20 and 60. Mora assured that a list of the injured still needs to be made because “a large number of prisoners are hospitalized” at Escuela Hospital.

“We will not tolerate vandalism or irregularities in this prison. Emergency intervention accompanied by firefighters, the National Police and the army is allowed. A state of emergency has been declared,” Honduran Deputy Security Minister Julissa Villanueva announced on her official Twitter profile.

For her part, the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, announced the dismissal of Security Minister Ramón Sabillon and appointed Gustavo Sánchez, who had been acting as director of the national police, as the new minister; Sabillón “will take up a position in the Honduran foreign service,” reports Efe.

“My solidarity with my relatives. I invite the Minister of Security and the President of the Intervention Commission to account. I will take drastic measures!” Castro stressed. The Honduran Foreign Minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina, condemned the “terrible crimes that took place in the Támara Penitentiary Center” and his “solidarity with the families of the victims”. “This shows a major escalation of the conspiracy against @XiomaraCastroZ by the dark forces that have turned Honduras into a narco-state,” he added.
