The German national men’s football team experienced their next humiliation in front of a sold-out house at the Schalke Arena. 0:2 against Colombia. Against a team that does not belong to the international football elite, the DFB team went astray in disgrace and had to listen to the whistling of the 50,421 spectators. The arena in Gelsenkirchen has 62,271 seats.
The lack of public interest in the national team is a pointer, just a year before the European Championship in their own country. It seems that the fans are losing interest in this team.
Not the national coach. Hansi Flick was remorseful after the bankruptcy against the South Americans. The 58-year-old did not want to know anything about a dismissal. “Of course for me it is a situation that I have never experienced in this form. I really like to win competitions. And I really hate losing.”
The only problem is that his side have won only four of their last 16 games. Also against teams like Costa Rica, Peru or Oman. In the heart of the Gelsenkirchen Arena, Flick gave the impression that everything was going according to plan.” I said I would go down this road with determination in June. I can train with the best players in Germany. I have a super team around me. I just enjoy getting a team ready for a tournament,” said the former Bayern coach.
He is firmly convinced that his idea of football also fits this team. And the team encouraged their coach in this assumption. “We have full confidence in him,” said goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. Defense attorney Benjamin Henrichs, when asked if Flick was still the right one, replied, “Yes, absolutely.”
Emre Can van Dortmund “did not want to discuss the national coach at all”. “The coach has put us in a very good position,” said Can. “He wanted to try what is his right. It didn’t work, but we shouldn’t question the coach. We players are responsible for not showing performance on the pitch.”
The sports management also gave the coach an encouraging pat on the back. Flick is “the poorest sow, he tries everything,” said Rudi Völler. The DFB sports director instead focused on the players. “The total package of three games was not enough, you have to say. There were a few (players, editor’s note), we will not see them again in September. One or the other has reached its limit. If we want to play a good EM, we need to burn more.”
For all the optimism Flick tried to spread (“I can promise we’ll see another team in September”), he couldn’t resolve the contradictions between the praise for his work and the results on the field. “It got out of hand. We are incredibly disappointed with the way it was done. I feel sorry for the fans. What we tried didn’t work,” he analyzed after the game.
That sounded like déjà vu to many observers. The diagnosis was similar after the disappointing performances against Ukraine and Poland. “We had no dynamics in the game, no lows. That also has to do with the self-confidence of each individual player,” Flick continued.
In fact, the coach himself gave dubious testimony to his work. One that is actually not enough for the transfer just before the summer holidays, because the figure is the same in many areas: insufficient.
