‘Do you want it with the pliers? With the hammer? The screwdriver?” – Online users could choose in a poll which tool to use to torture defenseless monkeys. The paying viewers then voted and watched the sadistic spectacle via live stream.
In a major investigation, the BBC has exposed a global torture ring stretching from Indonesia to the US. Hundreds of customers in the West paid Indonesians to torture and sometimes violently kill baby monkeys.
Some animals were thrown against the wall and their limbs were chopped off. Some users called for the animals to be thrown into boiling water – the BBC refrains from describing the worst forms of torture.
According to the BBC, the disgusting activity started on YouTube, from where it was eventually moved to private groups on Telegram. A global study is currently underway on 20 people, including three women living in the UK. In Indonesia, two animal abusers have been arrested and sentenced to prison terms.
The BBC spoke to some buyers and customers of the sadistic videos. An American man calling himself “Mr Ape” admitted in an interview that he was responsible for the deaths of at least four monkeys and the torture of many more monkeys. He had commissioned “extremely brutal” videos, he told the broadcaster.
He is one of five prime suspects in the ongoing US Homeland Security investigation. You can get up to seven years in prison. Their mobile phones were confiscated and hundreds of torture videos were confiscated.
Special Agent Paul Wolpert speaks of the detectives’ horror: “I don’t know if anyone was ever prepared for a crime like this. It’s shocking.” (new)
