Aileen Cannon, the lead judge in the criminal trial against former US President Donald Trump over classified documents found at his Florida home, on Tuesday ordered a jury trial on August 14 in Fort Pierce, 208 kilometers (129 miles) from Miami.
The judge notes this in the signed order the deadline for holding the trial is two weeks from August 14.
It also stipulates that if postponed for any reason, it will be held “as soon as possible”.
The deadline for the defense and the prosecution to submit requests in connection with the trial is next July 24.
While on August 8, a hearing will be held to resolve all the problems with the calendar.
Special prosecutor Jack Smith, in charge of the investigation, promised that the trial of Trump and his associate Waltina Nauta, who is charged as an aide, would be “swift” and “in accordance with the public interest and the rights of the accused”. .
Trump was accused in court of Miami of 37 federal crimes Penalties for mishandling official documents.
These crimes would be committed after the departure of the President of the United States (20017-2021), on June 13.
Of the 37 charges, to which Trump has pleaded not guilty, 31 are for knowingly hiding documents related to US defense.
However, he was also accused of obstruction of justice and concealment of “corrupt” documents or records.
Some of these crimes are punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Trump is the first president or former president in US history to be criminally indicted by the federal judiciary.
Judge Cannon, who is of Colombian and Cuban descent and was appointed by Trump, has her court in Fort Pierce.
Therefore, the trial will be held in that Palm Beach County city, the same one where Trump has his residence.
The issued order directs the defense and the prosecution to prepare for the trial and sets deadlines for all proceedings.
