The trial of former US President Donald Trump (77) in the documents affair will start in August. The responsible federal judge Aileen Cannon issued an order on Tuesday, August 14, to start the trial. The prosecution and defense have until July 24 to file procedural motions. The trial is taking place in the city of Fort Pierce, north of Miami, Florida.
However, it is considered unlikely that the trial will actually begin on August 14. Dates indicated by judges are often postponed. Especially since in Trump’s case, complicated questions must be clarified prior to the trial, including how to deal with classified documents as evidence.
Trump was charged with the documents affair on June 8. A week ago, the former president and candidate for the 2024 presidential election pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges.
The Republican is accused of illegally keeping secret files at his private residence Mar-a-Lago. He also faces charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice, concealment of documents and making false statements. If convicted, Trump could face a long prison sentence. Trump took the documents from the White House to Mar-a-Lago at the end of his term in January 2021. (AFP)
