In Afghanistan, the ruling Taliban have publicly executed a man for the second time since taking power in the summer of 2021.

He was executed in eastern Laghman province on Tuesday, the militant Islamist group’s Supreme Court said. Taliban officials and residents watched the execution.

Justice executed the man after he was found guilty of killing five people. The verdict came in line with Islamic jurisprudence, according to which a dead person’s family can take revenge. According to the statement, the man initially killed three men and one woman from a family. He later shot and killed another man from the same family. The motive and exact time of the crime were not mentioned in the statement.

The Taliban carried out the first public execution in December 2022. Since taking power in August 2021 and the chaotic withdrawal of international troops, the Taliban have drastically restricted human rights. The Islamists had initially promised to rule more moderately than during their reign of terror from 1996 to 2001. Their rule has recently become increasingly authoritarian and dogmatic. (sda/dpa)
